Character Relationships - Canon

Nephry Osborne
He's never had a "parental" figure in his life before. Shortly after he was created, he had people who told him what to do and instructed him in his duties, but there was no emotional connection between himself and those people. There was always a barrier of reverence that prevented that sort of relationship. He was the Fon Master, after all. But that's no longer the case with Nephry. Over the past two years, the barriers of mutual respect have been torn down, allowing instead for a sense of familiarity between the two of them.
The week they spent as true mother and son during the AU experiment made Ion realize how similar their present dynamic is to that kind of relationship. He still holds a great deal of respect for her. She's level-headed and strong (as one would have to be in order to deal with Jade and Dist) and she's been there for him during times when he needed it the most. Luceti has forced him to experience more emotional pain than he's ever had to deal with before and he'll forever be grateful to Nephry for all the help she's given him.
While Ion believes the party was able to assume his true intentions in the events surrounding his death, Nephry is the only person he has explicitly told that he intended to die. He trusts her more than he's ever trusted anyone. She's always been there for him when he needed someone. Although there is still that tendency to hold back his true feelings to avoid making her worry, he's beginning to break down that wall, allowing him to be completely honest and direct with her.
There's a part of Ion that will always regret not being able to get to know Nephry better during his lifetime. However, seeing as his life will only continue to exist so long as he is in Luceti, Ion accepts their friendship for what it is here, even though he knows Nephry will forget about their time together once she's returned to Auldrant.
"More than just as family, I... I've started to think of you as though you were my mother. Is it... would it be all right if I continue to think of you like that?"
Anise Tatlin
Then came November with all the drama with Arietta and he actually started (albeit unconsciously) moving away from Anise. They never really got a proper resolution to all of that, since save for Arietta successfully killing everyone, there isn't too much they can do to resolve things between them... That rift between them still lingers a bit, and even now there are a lot of things he's hesitant to talk to Anise about that he would have normally gone to her first for.
There's a part of him that will always love Anise, and a part of him that will probably always wonder what if things had gone differently between them. But as the person who's arguably known Ion the longest, chances are his feeling for her will eventually turn into a more familial sort of love rather than a romantic one. He already thinks of everyone in House One as his Luceti-family, and Anise is definitely a part of that.
Luke fon Fabre
He was loud and childish, but he wasn't afraid to speak his mind. And looking past that prickly outside, Ion could see well enough through his actions what kind of person Luke really was. After all, he was the one who offered to protect Ion in the Cheagle Woods (even though the manner in which he offered hadn't been very tactful). But more than that, Luke was a different kind of person from everyone else Ion had met up until that point. Everyone always treated him kindly and with respect because he was the Fon Master. But Luke, who knew so little of the world he was put into, didn't treat Ion like that at all. Ion was just Ion, and Luke used that same impolite bluntness on him as he did everyone else. Where the others found him annoying, Ion found it to be like a breath of fresh air.
Not to say the change in Luke wasn't an improvement, of course. On the contrary: the fact that Luke was strong enough to pull himself up from his own sins is one of the things Ion truly admires about him. And even with that change, Luke stayed Luke. He was still kind and considerate, just much better at showing it than he had been previously. Even after learning he was a replica, Luke was able to accept it and move forward. For a replica like Ion, who had simply accepted his role as a replacement for the previous Fon Master Ion, watching that change in Luke was inspiring. Ion owes a lot to Luke in that respect.
Now that Luke knows the truth about his fate on Auldrant, Ion feels as though there's nothing he couldn't talk to Luke about. He feels guilty for hiding his death from Luke, knowing how painful it must have been for him to learn due to the Malnosso's intervention. On the other hand, he's relieved that he no longer has to keep such a terrible secret from Luke. He wants to keep true to his promise never to hold information from Luke again.
Luke is by far one of his closest friends in Luceti. Ion is so grateful for this second chance at life he's been given that has allowed him to grow even closer to someone he cares about.
"Luke has always been kind. He just hasn't known how to express it."
Arietta the Wild
Despite this, he does think of her as his friend, and he wishes it could be possible for her to see him as he really is someday -- as someone different from the Ion she knew and loved. He's still working on it.
Of course, lately his chief concern is wondering how he'll tell her that he's sick, knowing she won't take it well. He's lucky in the sense that he doesn't run into her too often with where he typically hangs out, but he knows he'll have to face her sooner or later.
Tear Grants
It makes Ion so happy that he was able to use the life he was given to save Tear's. Truthfully, it had been Ion's intention to remove Tear's miasma by sacrificing himself even before he was laying on the ground, dying. In a sense, it almost worked out for the best; he doesn't know whether the others would have gone along with his idea otherwise, after all...
But things are a little different in Luceti. There's a part of Ion that feels like he should talk to Tear about it, that he needs to talk to her about it. He knows now just how much guilt Anise felt over his death, and a part of him is worried Tear might share some of the same feelings, given his sacrifice for her sake. But it's not exactly an easy thing to bring up, and the more time that passes, the less relevant is seems to his life here now.
Even so, having the chance to see her again, alive and healthy, makes him happier than he'd ever be able to put into words. Knowing that she'll be able to live a long, happy life once she returns to Auldrant has help put him at peace with the fact that he won't be returning himself.
"I like your songs a lot, Tear... They somehow seem very nostalgic."
Asch the Bloody
Asch saved Ion's life during that draft a long time ago, and even now, Ion can't help but feel guilty about not being able to do something to save Asch during the curse slot incident -- especially since he knows from Luke how Asch once felt about the Guy who had been in Luceti previously. Had he only been able to remove the curse slot before, maybe Asch wouldn't have had to die there. Confronting Sync was just about the only thing he could think of doing afterwards. He didn't intend to punch him in the face, but hey, being able to make Asch laugh with that story later was something.
Since Luke's gone home, he's probably started worrying more about Asch, finding excuses to check in on him when he can (though with Rapunzel gone now, it won't be as easy as exchanging casual greetings at the bakery by chance, seeing as Ion would stand out far more if he tried to visit the bar). He'll also be insisting that Asch come to the New Year's Party -- hopefully things won't be too awkward between him and Guy that he'd have a reason to try and back out. Because in all honesty, if Ion had to pick only one of them, he'd be more inclined to choose Asch.
Florian
Even though technically Florian is the "older" brother given he was "born" first, he's very much a younger brother in Ion's eyes, and he even refers to him as such when he talks about him to others in Luceti. Ion worries about him sometimes, especially when he goes off and starts eating leaves or bringing home less-than-friendly-looking bugs from the woods...
Still, there are a lot of topics Ion doesn't feel comfortable talking to Florian about, perhaps mostly because of the childish exterior Florian gives off. Though he tells himself he avoids certain topics because he's not sure Florian would understand, in truth he's just afraid of saying something that might ruin that child-like innocence of his. He knows someday Florian will have to grow-up, living in a place like Luceti, but for now, he hopes to put that off for as long as possible. Florian deserves his childhood.
And now that he's back home, Ion can only hope that he gets that chance again. Sometimes he can't help but wonder how things might have been different, how he might have been different, if he had gotten the opportunity to meet Florian. He might have been a real positive influence on Ion. It's sad to think that he won't remember the time they spent together, but maybe so long as Ion remembers, it'll still be as though it really happened.
Jade Curtiss
There's a reason he's a little unsure around Jade.
Their first conversation didn't really do much to help his opinion either, given how tense they both seem to get when the subject of replicas (and in this case specifically, memories) gets brought up. All things considered, Ion spent just as much time being friends with Dist in Luceti as he did knowing Jade on Auldrant.
But things are getting better. The more time they spend around one another, the more Ion starts to remember all the things he liked about Jade back home -- and all the reasons he once respected him for as well. Their relationship will probably always be different from how it once was back home, but maybe that's not necessarily a bad thing?
Peony Upala Malkuth IX
Sync the Tempest
Guy Cecil
And then the Curse Slot happened. To this day, Ion feels guilty about not removing the Curse Slot when he had the chance, even knowing it would have put his own life in danger -- after all, Asch died because of his carelessness. Not only that, he was killed by the person he once loved -- the same person who now didn't seem to feel anything for him. Even knowing it wasn't Guy's fault that what happened happened, there's a small part of Ion's heart that blames Guy for causing Asch to feel that pain, even knowing he obviously didn't intend for it to turn out that way. That incident actually stands as one of Ion's worst memories in Luceti, so it's definitely something they'll have to confront sooner or later.
Much like the friction between Ion and Jade back when he first arrived, Ion's experiences in Luceti have pushed him closer to those who've been here than to people he knew back home. There are people he's known here in Luceti for almost as long as he was ever even alive back home -- and notable to Guy, Asch is one of those people. It'll probably take awhile before their friendship can go back to how it was back on Auldrant -- and hopefully someday it can surpass even that.
